Mobility & Me

I’ve been a full-time fitness professional for nearly 20 years working as a personal trainer, mobility coach and yoga teacher in both London and Hong Kong.

I originally trained and worked as a personal trainer in a gym environment. This gave me the opportunity to see the benefits of a conventional training programme based on resistance and cardio activity. However, over the years I became aware of the importance of taking a holistic approach to physical wellness and I was drawn to both yoga and mobility as fundamental movement modalities that can add strength and flexibility to people at all levels of fitness and at any age.

My “Introduction to Mobility” Programme

In 2019 I became qualified as a Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) Mobility Specialist, and I have been coaching mobility 1-to-1 since then. Using all the knowledge and experience that I have gained I am now developing a 6 week on-line “Introduction to Mobility” Programme. Each week, through videos & other materials, I will share with you the key full body mobility moves safely and progressively. I’ll show you how to build mobility into your daily routine giving you the ability to improve your movement for life!

So, what is mobility training all about?

Mobility training is slowly gaining popularity as people begin to see and feel the benefits it can offer. The concept can be quite confusing, but it is essentially strength training at the end ranges of movement. This helps to improve both the health of the joint tissue and the range of movement available at the joint.

Regular mobility training has many benefits including:

  • Better balance

  • Improved coordination

  • Increased strength

  • Reduced risk of falls

  • Pain free movement

  • Increased flexibility

  • Improved body awareness

Building a mobility daily habit

Key to achieving the many benefits that mobility training can provide is to have a regular practice, ideally a daily practice. The goal is to build a short programme of exercises into your way of life. This is why mobility and daily habits go well together. You have probably heard of the concepts of “Atomic” and “Gateway” habits – powerful habits that can be built into your daily life and which can deliver significant results.

During the course we’ll explore how you can design your own, personalized set of movements and ways in which to embed them into your daily routines. A good place to start might be to look at our current daily activities and see if there’s an opportunity to add a new practice or habit onto an existing one, this is sometimes referred to as habit stacking. Mobility training is an area where adding a time boxed daily practice to an existing morning habit, such as cleaning teeth, meditation or making coffee, could work well.

As we’ll cover in the programme, consistency is key so if you need a way to stick with a new habit perhaps look at an accountability strategy – a way of tracking and celebrating achievements or an accountability partner to check in with.
